ICA - Psychedelics and the brain

This is an ICA event, sign up via the ICA website: ICA Young Professionals - Psychedelics and the brain

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in using psychedelic substances such as psilocybin and LSD for therapeutic purposes. But how do these compounds effect our brain and cognitive functions? We actually don’t know much about this, because these substances have been banned even for research purposes since the 1960s.

The recent revival of psychedelic science—combining unique exceptions to the ban with new developments in neuroimaging—paints a more complete picture.

How do psychedelics change the way the brain works? How might this explain their role in ancient rituals and modern therapeutics? And can a scientific approach ever explain the ineffable experiences people have reported after taking psychedelics?

In this talk, neuroscientist Jeroen van Baar, PhD weaves the latest scientific insights in with the colorful history of psychedelics.
